City of Vancouver wants your input into a planned series of upgrades on the Union-Adanac corridor from Gore Ave to Kamloops St.
Open House Events
- January 21 11 am – 3 pm WISE Hall, 1882 Adanac at Victoria Drive.
- January 23 4 pm – 7:30 pm Strathcona Community Centre, 601 Keefer at Princess.
Why do this? Well, it’s a busy corridor for people on bikes.

That plan looks great. I hope to see it realized one day.
Looks good, but I certainly hope it works better than the Union / Hawks upgrade. The city spent a tonne on that one, but for all their effort there are complaints in almost every Strathcona Residents Association newsletter about it. Pedestrians get hit fairly frequently. The tire pump they installed is also almost perpetually out of order.
This concept is a bit odd when it comes to who has the right-of-way. Unless there is a stop sign mid-block, the car traffic would have the right of way over bikes turning northwards onto Vernon from this path. If the cyclists have to wait, that green box is going to oddly located in the middle of the street directly adjacent to a 90° bend.
Essentially, it’s an Ideal spot for cars to cut the corner and intrude the bike box, or for cyclists to t-bone cars mid-corner.
This makes me think that two traffic circles would be a better option, even if the Vernon side restricted its lanes to cycle-only movements.
Project boards show stop signs for Vernon traffic so bikes would have ROW at both ends of the upgraded block.

I once believed what I read in the Strathcona Residents Association newsletter too but now I know better. (I question whether anyone has ever been hit at that intersection.) From what I’ve seen the intersection is working very well and is a big improvement over the old one.
Traffic circles are notorious for being awkward since people have differing ideas on who has priority.
This looks very promising. Although the worst section of Adanac in my experience is the overpass over Hwy 1, especially when travelling eastbound and turning left onto the Cassiar St bike route northbound to Second Narrows. Adanac is a bus route here, much used by drivers short cutting across the highway, a narrow street, a steep hill with poor sight line over the overpass.
Personally I don’t find the jag at Vernon Drive that much of a problem, at least not when I go through it. I find crossing Victoria Drive much more of a problem.
