Tickets are now available for the 2015 Laneway House Tour! Join us on October 24th to tour a selection of new laneway houses built behind heritage homes, along with some examples of historic densification. Throughout Vancouver’s development, different neighbourhoods have employed unique zoning to add density while preserving character and neighbourhood feel. Continuing a theme started with last year’s successful tour, we will once again look at both new and historic ideas for adding density in heritage-rich areas throughout the city.

Mid-Century Modern House Tour: Zaklan Residence
The Zaklan Residence is an intriguing home designed in 1969/70 by architect Peter Wardle. Constructed on a very narrow lot, the home is just 12 feet wide, but benefits from creative use of glazing and natural light. The three-floor residence has limited front-facing glazing, instead gaining light from a unique enclosed double-height courtyard and third-floor north-facing windows.
This truly unique home’s layout and structure was possible mostly due to the era in which it was built. With new local zoning, this house is unlikely to be built today. However, its narrow lot and wood façade help disguise it from the street, creating a private oasis. This home employs a number of the hallmarks of the Modern movement and is a fascinating study of the style. Join us on September 26th to see inside this and other examples of a remarkable era.
There are a limited number of tickets available for both the bus and self-guided tour option. Both options include a $50 donation to support VHF programming, with charitable tax receipt, a wine and cheese reception and a short talk from guest speaker Professor Leslie Van Duzer of the UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.
