Ontario Aggressive Driving Deaths Up 80%

The CBC reports that the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)  have come up with some sobering statistics, despite the increase of vehicle safety features.  “Aggressive driving deaths on highways up 80% over last year…(and) speeding is the No. 1 cause of road fatalities on OPP-patrolled roads in Ontario so far this year”
Think of that-in Ontario speeding has been linked to thirty road deaths so far this year. Last year there were 17 road deaths at the same time.
Even more surprising, “the OPP says officers have laid more than 1,400 charges so far this year against drivers clocked at 50 km/h or more over the posted speed limit”. A breathtaking 240,000 speeding charges were laid by the OPP last year.
Similar behaviour can be observed on the new Highway 17 which connects Tsawwassen and Highway One near Langley. There just are not places for the Police to safely set up and monitor speeds, which are posted at 80 km/h but often exceed 120 km/h.
Back to Ontario: “Even one life lost to reckless or dangerous driving is one life too many,” Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca said Tuesday in a release. “Excessive speeding is completely unacceptable and I urge everyone travelling on the roads this Canada Day long weekend to slow down and stay safe.”
