Global Shipping on One Map

From Gladys We:
Here’s a fun interactive map of global shipping. ShipMap allows users to selected color coding for ship types: container, dry bulk, tanker, gas bulk, and vehicles. It even lets you select animated ships on their routes.

The map was generated with 2012 data from the UK-based UCL Energy Institute, which looks at “the challenges of climate change and energy security.”

  1. Interesting map. It shows how little Canada is volume-wise compared to traffic through the Straight or Hormuz to ship oil, for example, or Baton Rouge, or New Orleans, New York, Hamburg, Rotterdam or South China Sea.
Transportation sucks up a lot of oil (or diesel or bunker fuel). 8B people eat a lot and use a lot of stuff. Any “green” condo dweller should have a look and see where their yoga pants, running shoes, bike tires, sweater, TV, banana or cell phone comes from. It is all part of this traffic, if if they only bike or walk.

  2. Since we are all rich and don’t need any more money, all we have to do is stop a couple of tankers a week on our coast and we will save the world.
Goddess mother Gaia will be pleased.

  3. Perhaps so, Thomas and Eric.
What these maps tell others though is how sensitive, long and vulnerable our supply chains really are. There should be another map with cargo flights imposed on the shipping, and yet another that distinguishes between vital cargo and cheap junk.

    1. What these maps tell us though is how robust our long supply chains really are.
More and more air cargo goes in the bellies of the airliners. It’s a major part of the business. Even a relatively small Boeing 767 can carry over 40 containers. Loaded with both expensive and cheap junk.
