REVIVER Sport+Entertainment is proposing CitySurf — a pay-to-play wave pool, beach and surfing site for the east end of False Creek. There are no financials available, but my wild-ass guess is that they’d like to have a whole bunch of Vancouver park and waterfront land for free as part of the deal.
“Vancouver is an ocean city with an active outdoor water-oriented lifestyle, but due to geography it lacks open ocean surf. CitySurf changes all that,” said architect and REVIVER CEO Philip Davis in a statement. . . .
. . . CitySurf , provides Vancouverites with social amenities and programmed park space, all while actively addressing the significant pollution problem in False Creek through an innovative water filtration system within a floating wavepool.
Copenhagen has public in-harbour swimming, only stands to reason such would work better here, all else being equal. I like it.
Yes maybe they could clean part of the water and charge people to surf but let people swim in another area for free.
That’s exactly what we’re proposing – surfing would be pay-for-use, the public beach would be free. Take a look at the website CitySurfpark.com
The concept we’ve presented actually doesn’t require any waterfront or park land, and we don’t envision any free use of public space. The surfpark infrastructure is to be located completely on the designated water lot adjoining Telus Science World and Creekside Park. We would plan to simply interface at the water’s edge in those areas. The public beach itself may push into the future adjoining park area on the north side of False Creek, but only if that idea fits with the design of that park space as it evolves in the near future. Our concept is all about respecting the existing public amenities, while creating a sustainable and integrated community asset. We want CitySurf to highlight how a recreational amenity can significantly add to the quality of Vancouver’s urban life.
