Thanks, Ken, for this photo of one of “The Nurses” perched on the podium corners of the Cathedral Place office tower, having been transplanted from their original stations adorning the former Georgia Medical Dental Building on this same site. The demolition of the Georgia Medical Dental was, of course, immensely controversial. Its replacement, Cathedral Place, designed by Paul Merrick, is an outstanding piece of architecture and urban design, with its public courtyard garden and perimeter arcades framing the complimentary Bill Reid Gallery pavilion and opening up new vistas and promenades to the adjacent heritage Christ Church Cathedral and the Burrard-fronting Park Place plaza. While the loss of a notable heritage building such as the Georgia Medical Dental must never be taken lightly (and IT WAS NOT at the time!), the exceptional design quality of Cathedral Place, including the gesture of preserving The Nurses, is one of those rare examples of the new development being an improvement over the heritage building it has replaced.
