Arbutus Corridor De-railing

At the intersection of Burrard St and the corridor, rail removal is done, for that short stretch that crosses Burrard. The remainder will take at least a year.

  1. Does anyone know if there is a future planned for those rails? Other places in Vancouver, historically, have included old rails in their landscaping (Granville Island, Gastown being two examples).

  2. My understanding is that they will be recycled, they will also be replaced as one of the conditions of the sale is that this will remain a transportation corridor, so while pedestrian and cycling paths will be put in, a light rail line will also be operating in the future.

I agree. The corridor will be completely de-railed, since the old rails are not useable due to deterioration and, in any case, likely not being a match for any future light rail system. The Arbutus Greenway design will set aside space for the light rail system. But new rails won’t go in until the new system does.

    1. Re: deterioration. That is why the CPR’s garden dust up and threat to run trains was a land sale negotiation tactic at the same time the rail deterioration would never support the weight of trains throughout the corridor.

Man, that work out well for them

  4. The City is responsible for taking out the rails crossing roads. CP is responsible for taking out the rest. Two different schedules.
