Referendum: MLA Response – Jane Shin

Price Tags is asking every MLA in Metro Vancouver questions about the referendum.

Jane Shin, NDP MLA for Burnaby-Lougheed:

.

How will you advise your constituents to vote on the Transportation & Transit Referendum?

The upcoming referendum on public transportation in Metro Vancouver is one of critical importance in many respects, and as such I will be asking that the people of Burnaby-Lougheed mail-in a ballot that says yes. Burnaby is third largest city in BC that is growing at an exponential rate with our population now reaching a quarter million. In order to allow traffic to efficiently flow in and out of our city and to get our residents to and from work quickly, I am calling on the BC Liberal Government needs to step up and begin properly funding transit.

.

What is the priority in the Mayors’ package (if any) for your riding?

In Burnaby-Lougheed we will benefit immensely from a new B-Line Bus service, greater capacity on the Millennium Line and Evergreen Line, and more improvement on the roads and the bicycle lanes. The investment seen at all levels of transit will mean that everyone in the community will benefit with life becoming more convenient, cheaper, and healthier.

.

How do you plan to participate in the referendum campaign?

Throughout the referendum campaign I will be engaging all members of the community, particularly youth, and providing them with information needed to make an informed decision. My NDP caucus colleagues and I will be working hard to ensure that everyone realises the vital benefits this comprehensive transit plan has for the economy, small businesses, students, seniors, and the community as a whole.

 .

Any other comments?

The mayors’ council is focused upon openness and transparency, and as such has committed to participating in independent audits and public reporting. TransLink has also made similar commitments, and it’s time for the Liberal Government to stand behind the hard work of these two institutions, and stand up for the best interests of those in Metro Vancouver.
