On the Dunsmuir Bike Lane: The good, the bad

It’s hard for me to decide if this is a good or a bad thing.
A rented truck is delivering movie-making hardware to a location shoot at Holt Renfrew, where a door opens onto the Dunsmuir bike lane.  So they park in the bike lane, and put a flag person at either end of the truck.   And warning cones.
Fair warning, and decent concern for bike traffic.  So that’s good in its own way.

However, there is plenty of room on Granville or Howe, but the truck goes in the bike lane.  So that’s bad.

  1. *shrug* Well, car traffic frequently loses lanes to construction, so… I guess equality? Not ideal, agreed, but not terrible.

  2. The truck goes closest to the sidewalk without having to haul heavy equipment over a planter (or hiring union-paid City workers to temporarily move the planters).
    It’s a functionality decision, not a political priority decision – and likely the convenience that the film company is paying the City for when it buys its permits. If that were a car lane, that car lane would also be blocked.
    Note that there is still space for a cyclist to ride past the truck in the lane – they just need to be watchful and courteous to each other if they come face to face.

  3. They’re handling it responsibly, unlike the food service truck that just blocked the lane each night to supply the Starbucks. (Not sure if it still happens.)
